This is the store of HKS, as told by the founder himself, HKS Predator
"The Birth of HKS (HunterKillerS)
Where to begin?
I guess I should start with myself and what brought HKS to where it is today.
I've been messing around with computers since 1981. Soldier of Fortune was the first computer game I ever bought that was capable of online gaming. At this time, around 2000, I only had dial up and when trying to play online in the Death Match games was almost impossible to do any thing. I would die before even seeing my opponent. After a few weeks of this I got frustrated and pretty much gave up on online gaming til 2002. I finally got cable internet before DSL.
After finally being able to play DM with some kills, I pretty much honed my skills playing SoF in the Death Match and CTF modes for about a year. Then one day I was bored and started looking at the list of servers and exploring the different types of gameplay and noticed a Snipe Only server. This is where I also first learned about the long downloads of maps and ghouls (LOL). Fortunately I was never kicked or banned while learning the aspects of sniping and the players were helpful in teaching me the rules. I wish I had those old maps because I have not seen them since.
I used to go by the names LoosMaster and ByteMe in the DM and CTF servers. This flowed over into the Snipe until after playing for about 6 months I became friends with a player named Grouch. He had played SoF online since it's release and had been around Sniping since they started that part of SoF. He taught me alot about hosting a server and the commands for rcon and how to color my name and binds and introduced me to MSN. Prior to this all I used the internet for was Email and research in my job field.
One day he approached me about starting a new team and we discussed it for a few days and I was pretty much reluctant to get involved in anything related to the internet. But as you can see, I did. We started up a Forum and Grouch ran the Snipe Server on his machine. Thus, HKS was born as with my name also HKS PreDaToR. The team name originated from a U.S. Navy Squadron I was in, VS-28 Hukkers(HunterKillerS). Their mission was Anti-Submarine Search and Destroy.
After a few weeks of running HKS, a certain well known player started complaining on the forum about the way I was running the server. Not operating it like all the other "Snipe Community Servers". I was trying to help new players as they came in and of course you'll have some bad killing. This player was impatient about how long it took me to start kicking players. This lead to a Tit for Tat on the forum and I refused to bow to pressure from a player outside of the Team. Then we let a well know player join, who in my opinion, one of the top 2 snipers I've ever played against but had a really nasty attitude to other players when confronted about his play style. This of course started another temper tantrum by certain players on the forum when he was given rcon. I basically told him that if I kicked and banned all bad killers, you'll have no one to shoot. Well, if you haven't noticed, the other Snipe Servers are empty because of this tactic.
Anyway, I got fed up with his complaining and I told Grouch I was out. Grouch was on this players side and told me I could keep HKS and he bowed out and quit playing SoF altogether because of the constant complaining. This was my first rebellion against the so called "SNIPE COMMUNITY". As a result of this altercation, I banned this player and all hell broke loose and he started posting on all the Snipe Forums to stay away from the HKS Server. He stayed on that list for 6 months before he came around to how I wanted HKS to be and he had to accept that. The birth of our motto: Play the Game and Have Fun.
By this time, I was the only HKS member. I started hosting my own server. I had a few players that would come in and play for a while then not be seen again. But there was this one WHACKO that came in more frequent than any other and was a joy to play against. This players name was Preacher. After we got to know each other, I started to try to get him to take Rcon for the server because he was a frequent vistor. Believe me, this was no easy task at first, he refused the position as I did for awhile because I didn't want to get involved in anything. But after my irritating CoonAzz persistance, he broke in and took it.
The next step was trying to convince him to join HKS, this was another long battle with him, LOL. You can ask him as to why he finally broke in. It wasn't long after HKS Preacher joined that HKS took off. We started getting Team Mates at the rate of about 2-3 a month. We never had or established a set of rules for joining. We always pretty much judged everyone on their attitude and not their skills.
To all the players that joined HKS, Thank You for your participation.
To all the players that joined HKS and have stayed active, I bow to your persistance and joy of playing this game and staying involved with it's survival.
To those that have just joined, Welcome aboard and I hope you have as much fun as we have being a part of this Team."
